The visa is named after Schengen, a town in Luxembourg, where European Union (EU) and non-EU countries signed the Schengen Agreement, which established a border-free travel zone among participating countries.

How Many Types of Schengen Visa Are There?

There are three main types of Schengen visas, each with a different purpose.

   1. Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C)

A Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C) allows travelers to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the most common type of Schengen visa and is ideal for tourism, business trips, family visits, or attending short-term events.

This visa is available in three entry options:

  •  Single Entry Visa – Allows you to enter the Schengen Area once. After you leave, the visa can no longer be used, even if it is still valid.
  •  Double Entry Visa – Allows you to enter the Schengen Area twice during the visa's validity period.
  •  Multiple Entry Visa – Allows you to enter and leave the Schengen Area multiple times as long as your visa remains valid and you do not exceed the maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period.

   2. Long-Stay Schengen Visa (Type D)

A Long-Stay Schengen Visa (Type D) allows travelers to stay in a Schengen country for more than 90 days. This type of visa is typically issued to individuals who plan to study, work, or live in a Schengen country for an extended period.

   3. Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

An Airport Transit Visa (Type A) is issued to travelers who need to transit through the international transit area of an airport in a Schengen country while connecting to a flight bound for a destination outside the Schengen Area.

Holders of this visa are not permitted to leave the airport's international transit zone or enter the Schengen country during their layover.
